in connecticut is fresh on everybody's minds. what were your biggest stories of the year? >> it feels so obvious, but i think the presidential election has to be on the list. something that we all followed very, very closely. so much happened. the debates were obviously interesting, covering the convention. it happens once every four years. incredibly consequential. i think it says a lot about what presidential elections will look like. we learned a lot about the changing demographics of this country. >> exactly. looking forward to the inauguration coming up in the new year. i think for all of us, i think around here certainly we've covered superstorm sandy. this was such a tragic event. i mean, a storm like this has not been seen here in this -- for centuries. i think that, you know, obviously the devastating effects that it continues to have on so many areas from the rockaways to new york to connecticut and long island. i was up in the helicopter. seeing that devastation first hand, when you see the scope of it, it's just enormous. >> this year was marked by a lot of tragedy from aurora, bengh

, as it gets to work. ♪ cisco. tomorrow starts here. >>> throughout newtown, connecticut, teddy bears, the candles, pictures of christmas trees, they were displayed everywhere in remembrance of the victims who lost their lives in the shooting massacre at sandy hook elementary. the community united during the holiday to support the families of the victims who are grieving. 20 children, 7 adults killed on december 14th. the memorials remembering them are here to stay, we have learned. an official announced a special plan by the city to convert the memorial, here is part of what this city official told residents. the thousands of flowers, letters and prayers, the signs and photos, teddy bears and more will be gathered and processed into soil that will serve in the foundation of a future permanent memorial to honor the slain children and adults. officials say it will be a sacred memorial. the items will be collected and converted starting this week. >>> now, new information on that tragic shooting in upstate new york on christmas eve. two firefighters were shot and killed. two others were

, connecticut school attack, there's been plenty of talk about arming teachers and 2/3 of americans believe arming at least one official would be somewhat effective against attacks. >> reporter: the gun is fake. but these utah teachers fear the threats facing their classrooms is very real. 200 of those teachers became students. packing a conference room on their holiday break to learn how to carry a concealed weapon on the job, and how to protect their schools from an armed intruder. >> the safety is the biggest part and to be able to use them appropriately is really high priority for me. >> reporter: utah is one of few states where public schools allow guns on campus. but in the wake of the shooting at sandy hook, the push is on to add more states to that list. arizona's attorney general wants every school principal or the designee armed. in ohio, applications for shooting courses are up 20%. simply knowing that someone on campus might be carrying a gun could be enough to stop the bad guys. in 1997, an armed high school vice principal in mississippi did manage to stop a shooter. but there
